Sponsorships

Providing high school scholarships for deserving impoverished students
Picture

WHY SPONSORSHIPS
Children of rural families living on less than $2/day cannot afford tuition fees required for secondary education. Without sponsor support, even the brightest child will not gain a high school education. Early marriage and motherhood await uneducated girls. Uneducated boys turn to day labor, bicycle taxi and farming,

WHAT WE DO
To improve children's social and economic future, KSHP's sponsorship program provides high school scholarships to high-achieving orphaned and disadvantaged youth in Kendu Bay, western Kenya. Deference is given to girls.

PROGRAM OUTCOMES
  • More than 200 Kendu Bay students receive high school scholarships since 2006.
  • Over 90% of sponsored students earn university scholarships.
  • More than 5,000 hrs. community service volunteered to local schools, hospitals and social services.
  • Careers dedicated to education, medicine, law, engineering, economics, business, information technology and more.

WE HAVE DISCOVERED that successful social and academic adjustment of 'at risk' children requires an integrated program of mentoring, life skills training and home/school oversight.

HOW THE PROGRAM WORKS
Each year, hundreds of high-performing destitute students seek our scholarship assistance, KSHP interview committee screens and selects the most capable and deserving.

Scholarship recipients are linked to a sponsor who partners with 'their' student throughout his/her high school years. Students study at county and national boarding schools noted for high academic standards and quality instruction,

Scholarships pay school fees, room and board, textbooks and emergency medical support. Sponsored students also receive mentoring and home/school visits, life skills education & leadership training and personal support integral to helping them be socially and academically successful.

Sponsors receive photos, personal letters and term grade reports three times/year. Periodic email updates keep sponsors informed of their student's progress. Sponsors also receive family background information and school visit reports. The relationship that grows between sponsors and students can develop into lifelong bonds.

"Your sponsorship saved me from the jaws of hyenas. All around me in Kendu Bay I see my peers with babies on their laps. Many are wives, not out of choice but because they were not as lucky as me to get the chance to further their education. Thank you for giving me a voice and the ability to make choices."    Winnie Auma, sponsored 2006-2009. Graduated Nairobi University 2014.  Partial orphan

"Before your sponsorship, our family poverty overshadowed my ability to think beyond it. But from the day I joined high school, I learnt that I had ability to take control of my life and the situation. My focus has been to be the best I can be and you as a family have given me the opportunity. Your commitment has been a great source of encouragement and motivation to me."    David Agwanda, sponsored 2006-2009.   Graduated Maseno University 2014.  Total orphan

SPONSOR TESTIMONIALS
"KSHP has a proven process for identifying talented youngsters, giving them essential support, and making appropriate demands that kids give back to their communities.  That's why we joined in as sponsors and why we will keep doing so."     Meg & John Menke,  Barnesville, MD

"We have sponsored five youngsters over the years.  Each "made it" in their own way because Kenya Self-Help is responsive to the needs and talents of each individual. The staff is not interested in a cookie-cutter approach or in the easiest way to achieve what may look good on paper. They are smart, effective, flexible, persistent, sensitive, always mindful of their mission. Their sustained dedication and the power of their results have kept us with KSHP for nine years and counting."  Alida & John Dinklage,  So. Burlington, VT
